6 Merit Scholarships for High Schoolers: May Round-Up

School's out for summer! It's the season for poolside lounging and making a splash with your scholarship applications. During these long summer days, set aside some time to work on scholarship applications with upcoming deadlines.

1. Abbott & Fenner Scholarship

Deadline: June 14, 2018

Eligibility: U.S. and International Junior and Seniors in high school and current college students are eligible to apply.

Award: One award of $1000.

Requirements: In 500 – 1000 words describe your educational, career, and life goals. Include your plan for achieving these goals as well as your intended degree and major, why you selected your degree and major, and how this degree and major will help you achieve your goals.

2. Delete Cyberbullying

Deadline: June 30, 2018

Eligibility: U.S. high school freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors, college students, and graduate students

Award: One award of $1000.

Requirements: Write a 500-word (or less) response to one of the following prompts:

  1. "Why is it important to work to delete cyberbullying?"

  2. "How has cyberbullying personally affected you?"

3. Innate $1000 Scholarship

Deadline: June 30, 2018

Eligibility: U.S students ages 13 or older, currently enrolled in or planning to be enrolled in post-secondary school by 2024.

Award: One award of $1000. Scholarship offered bi-monthly.

Requirements:  Register for an Innate account and take a short online assessment related to understanding your unique strengths and challenges. After completing the assessment, respond in 250 words or less to the following prompt: “Tell us how understanding your Innate Assessment learning style will prepare you to succeed in college."

4. Family Travel Forum Teen Travel Writing Scholarship

Deadline: July 9, 2018

Eligibility: Middle and high school students ages 13-18 attending grades 8-12 in the U.S. or Canada, or an American international school abroad, or a U.S. home-school program

Award: Three awards. $1000 (1st prize), $500 (2nd prize), $250 (3rd prize).

Requirements: Write a travel blog about a trip you've taken in the last 5 years. Blogs must be less than 600 words in length.

5. Foundation for Your Future 2018 Scholarship

Deadline: August 1, 2018

Eligibility: Open to U.S. high school seniors and current college students with a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Award: One award of $500.

Requirements: This scholarship requires two essays (one short and one long):

  1. Write an introduction of 100-200 words. Introduce yourself and explain how you would use the scholarship to improve yourself through education. This is the place to add unique details about yourself to stand out from the other applicants.

  2. Write a 500-1000-word essay explaining how attending college will allow you to achieve your future goals. Describe how you plan to leave your personal mark on the world and how college will help make that happen.

6. Pumphrey Law Firm Scholarship

Deadline: August 1, 2018

Eligibility: U.S. citizens who have been accepted to or are currently attending college.

Award: Three awards. $750 (1st prize), $500 (2nd prize), $250 (3rd prize).

Requirements: Applicants must submit a copy of unofficial high school or college transcript and write an 800-1000 word response to one of the following topics: 

  1. Binge Drinking: Are binge drinking and ego a dangerous combination? What can we do to raise awareness of and prevent binge drinking?

  2. Hazing: What are the impacts of hazing to academic as well as personal life? How can we raise awareness of and work to prevent hazing?

  3. Opioid Crisis: Florida (as well as many other states) have seen an increase in the opioid crisis during the past decade. What would you do to raise awareness to try to prevent abuse and death from opioid addiction?
